Langan’s in the Brown House in the village

Kate Langan - proud & excited owner of Langan’s in Hurstbridge Village

That beaming smile belongs to foodie Kate Langan who is very excited to have launched her new business, Langan’s Cafe and Foodstore, now open in the Brown House. Judging by her welcome Hurstbridge locals are just as excited!

No stranger to the area, Kate is loving the Hurstbridge community that has welcomed her with open arms and a rush of patronage. She’s “kind of local” living with her family in North Warrandyte and grew up in Eltham.

“I’ve always lived out this way, and we’re so happy to get that community feel, you know, and yes, I think we kind of got dragged into it, based on the people that have been in and out of here!” said Kate, delightedly with a big very big smile on her face.

“We've got a lot of locals who are coming to work here, so we’ve had lots and lots of interest, mostly from young people, and pretty much just from Hurstbridge, so that’s fantastic.

“We'd been running a corporate catering company for about 20, 25 years in Box Hill.  We did all the events at Box Hill Town Hall most of the time. So we used to run and cater all the local council and local traders events and more.  So that's where I've come from.

“We took a time out and when I saw this pop up I knew this is what I’ve been searching for. I’ve always wanted to have a go at this style of business and look after people, individually.”

This is Kate’s business and vision but she’s had a lot of help.

“It’s been an all-family effort,” she said proudly as she introduced me to her son’s girlfriend Meg who was helping set up. “Harry did a few tradie things for me and my daughter and her boyfriend have been in and out doing bits and pieces. My husband was ‘demo’ man when we had to get the oven out and he’s cleaned and helped get all the hard jobs done. So it’s been a big family effort to launch.”

Kate is opening up shop 7 days a week during the day and when the weather gets better has plans to offer some daytime, early evening grazing plates and share platters on Fridays and Saturdays. Something to sit down and nibble and enjoy a glass of wine late afternoon, living up to the ‘ultimate cafe and cheeky wine destination’ aspirations!

There’s a lot of love in the village for this beautiful building and locals have given a big thumbs up to its latest reincarnation after we fondly and sadly farewelled Restaurant St Lawrence. It’s lovely to see some familiar young and excited faces behind the beautiful counter and waiting at tables at their new place of work. FYI - highly recommend the toasted sandwiches - next level!
